SAT preparation

An SAT error log should record the decision that went wrong and what you will try next. An answer letter alone cannot do that. Use the free CSV below in Excel or Google Sheets, or copy the six-column version into a notebook. The two completed entries show how to move from “careless mistake” to an action you can test.

Keep the question reference, your reasoning, the corrected reasoning and a later check. A reference is enough; you do not need to copy an entire copyrighted question into a spreadsheet. Record guesses that happened to be right as well as wrong answers. Otherwise, a correct letter can hide an unresolved skill.
Use College Board’s My Practice to inspect an official practice attempt. Keep official test results separate from performance on isolated drills: an untimed ten-question set is not a new SAT score. The log is a learning record, not a score calculator.
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Question reference | Test or drill name and question number. |
| My decision | The step I took or the reason I chose an answer. |
| Error cause | A specific concept, interpretation or pacing problem. |
| Correction | The reasoning I should be able to explain. |
| Next task | One small action using fresh material. |
| Recheck result | Date, new question reference and whether I explained it unaided. |
For this original example, solve −2(x − 3) = 10. A student writes −2x − 6 = 10 and gets x = −8. Calling this “careless” does not identify the faulty step. The minus sign must apply to both terms in the parentheses: −2x + 6 = 10, so x = −2.
Substitution makes the repair visible: −2(−2 − 3) = 10. The student can now choose a short set involving negative distribution and check each result in the original equation. That is more useful than redoing unrelated easy algebra to feel productive.
Imagine two sentences: a library expected attendance to fall after reducing opening hours; attendance instead increased. A student picks a transition meaning “therefore” because both sentences discuss attendance. The actual relationship is contrast between the prediction and the result.
Write the relationship in plain language before considering a transition. In this invented example, the log would say “I matched the topic but ignored the reversal.” A useful follow-up task is to label relationships in several new sentence pairs—contrast, continuation or cause—before selecting any answer.
At the end of a week, group entries by the underlying skill. Three negative-distribution misses need one focused repair session, not three separate essays about your mistakes. If entries come from different domains, choose a small number you can realistically address before the next review.
Retest with new material. Getting a previously missed question right after reading its explanation can show memory rather than transfer. Record whether you can explain the new solution without notes. Keep “not yet” as a legitimate result; it tells you what remains to learn.
Shorten it if maintaining it takes more time than correcting the errors. You can write a sentence rather than a paragraph, and skip a lengthy explanation when the cause is already clear. If you keep entering the same issue, stop adding rows and change the practice task.
A timing problem also needs evidence. “Ran out of time” might mean slow setup, rereading, or spending too long on one problem. Note what happened before deciding that the solution is simply to work faster. Use official timed practice to understand the full testing experience.
